A Special Mother's Day

This is my fifth Mother's Day as a Mommy. It was a sweet day filled with brunch, some gardening, and a nice dinner.

I spent a lot of today, thinking of all of the people who helped make me the mom I am today.

We have wonderful birth-families, who we treasure each and every day. I have great friends that I can turn to for advise when I have a "what do I do now" moment. I also have *my* Mommy to learn from.

I was lucky to be able to spend Mother's Day with my Mommy. I have tried in vain many times to put into words how I feel about my Mom. I have scoured the Hallmark section at the grocery store looking for the "perfect card" to say what I have been unable to voice. Now that I have a four year old and a 15 month old, my "quiet time" to reflect and gather my thoughts has been pretty much obliterated, so this is my stab at honoring my Mommy:

Mom let me make mistakes that I would learn from, and tried to keep me from making mistakes that would hurt me. Now that I am a mother myself, I can truly appreciate the depth of pain, pride, and love for my children that course through my veins in any given day. I cannot believe it is any less powerful for her.

The night Alex was diagnosed with cancer, the first person I called was my mom. She told me that everything was going to be all right. Other people told us that too, however when Mommy said it, a certain calm washed over me. Her quiet strength through this ordeal has carried me many times when, if alone, I would have fallen.

I love you Mom - Happy Mother's Day!

  1. More tears - I love you, too. You've turned into a lovely woman and mom. Someday you'll also cry when you read a sweet note from your children on Mother's Day.
